Nat

Nat could feel the heat burning in her cheeks, and the adrenaline pumping through her veins that begged her to get up and walk right out of that coffee shop. Do not pass go. Do not pour your heart out to this girl.

She couldn’t tear her eyes off Christy, wanting nothing more than to launch herself across the table and throw her arms around her so they could pick up right where they left off – right in this very coffee shop where they’d spent so many long, leisurely summer days. Nat had never felt like she did when she was with Christy – not with the pretty young starlets or even with Zoe Asher, who she mistakenly believed had broken her heart when Nat walked in on her in bed with another woman.

But Zoe couldn’t break her heart because it had always – always – belonged to Christy. Even if she was too afraid to admit it.

Run, her mind said, but for once, she stayed where she was. Nat reached across the table for Christy’s hands but Christy cupped them around her coffee mug instead.

Taking a deep breath, Nat said, “I’ve never really known what love is. My mom was no great role model in that regard, and I didn’t have anyone else to look to. The idea of opening my heart up and trusting someone else with it – even you – has always terrified me and so I told myself I didn’t want that. I convinced myself that one-night stands and casual flings were enough for me, and when things got real between the two of us, I shut you out. It wasn’t until I came back here and reconnected with you that I realized how wrong I was.”

Christy’s expression softened and she slid one hand across the table, her fingertips grazing Nat’s hand. It was an olive branch that Nat dearly wanted to cling to, but just then, the barista announced from the counter, “Okay, folks, we’re getting ready to close in ten minutes.”

Christy withdrew her hand and they turned to the practical matters of taking their empty cups to the counter and putting on their jackets. When they got to Christy’s car parked at the curb outside, she asked, “So, where are you staying?”

Nat glanced at her guitar case in the back seat and said, “Actually, I hadn’t gotten that far yet. I was going to get a hotel room in Granville, but that’ll be at least thirty minutes out of your way to drive back to the city. Is there a hotel or motel you can drop me off at between here and your place?”

“I’m sure there is,” Christy said, and then after a moment of hesitation she added, “Why don’t you just stay with me tonight?”

“Are you sure?” Nat asked.

“Nothing’s going to happen between us,” Christy said firmly. “But I have a spare room and I have a feeling the motels of Westbrook are not going to be up to your standards.”

Nat feigned offense, putting her hand to her chest.
